Words Andy Leuterio

Choices, choices, and more choices! The influx of digital SLR cameras may leave you perplexed, and we can't blame you. How many megapixels do you really need? What's all this talk about ISO, shutter speed, interchangeable lenses, filters, etc.? We've made the job a little easier for you-we've lined up the top-of-the-line digital SLRs from Canon, Fuji, Nikon, and Olympus. All you need to do now is choose.

Canon EOS 30D
Modeled after the award-winning Canon 20D, the magnesium alloy-bodied 30D is an upgraded version with a generously-sized 2.5-inch LCD. This 8.2-megapixel camera boasts a 3.5% area spot metering and pre-set Picture Style likened to different film types, each one offering a different color response giving photographers control over saturation, contrast, color tone, and sharpness.

Another headline improvement is its selectable continuous shooting speeds between 3fps and 5fps for better exposure control; ISO settings are now adjustable by 1/3 stop increments rather than whole stops. Canon has also upgraded its built-in flash to match the 100,000 shutter cycle durability, and has increased the maximum number of images in a folder from 100 to 9,999.

Canon is still on top of its game as the 30D is embedded with its prized CMOS sensor technology that assures you of exceptional per-pixel sharpness and noise reduction at higher sensitivities (ISO 1600/3200). It also features Canon's DIGIC II processor, which maximizes speed and image quality by processing uncompromisingly complex color rendition algorithms, clearing the buffer at high speed.
