Wushu Artist: Janice Hung
Interview by Andy Leuterio

Never argue with someone who's got a very sharp sword. Especially if the person wielding it is none other than Janice Hung, the high-kicking wushu artist who's never made shampoo look so? dynamic on the boob tube. Silver medalist at the 2005 SEA Games, Janice placed an impressive 8th overall only a few weeks later at the World 8 Wushu Championships in Vietnam against the best artists from all over the world.

On TV she is a veritable Ziyi Zhang, whirling and slicing and chopping the air with the grace and deadly precision that only a real martial artist can possess. In the flesh, she strides into our makeshift studio with confidence and purpose. A very busy person, balancing training with four businesses at the same time while also having to deal with her newfound pseudo-celebrity status and its obligations, Janice sits down for the interview and looks intently into our eyes, possibly bracing for a barrage of inane to invasive questions such as, oh, "What's your favorite color?"

I can see it in her eyes, studying me like a fighter in a match, coolly planning her moves before she moves in for the killing blow. Naturally, we just had to ask?

So? What's your favorite color?
Hmm?

Please put that sword down! How long have you been at this?
I started wushu when I was seven years old, but I practically got serious about it in college, when I was 16 or 17 years old.

What was it like to win the silver in the SEA Games?
I was so happy and satisfied, it was my first competition for my new event! Just really happy!

Any other pursuits aside from martial arts?
Marami rin because aside from martial arts I do business. I have several businesses: computers, garments, and a skin care and health care product line. That's why I'm very busy and frequently out of the country. But it's how you balance things. For me it's actually fun and challenging.
