Samsung, on the other hand, has managed to pull to pull some surprises of its own, its SCH-V450 is a
clamshell phone with stereo sound and the ability to generate 3D effects within its diminutive screen.
The Samsung comes pre-loaded with two games Ziogolf and Metalion. The keypad for functions such as
menu and extends out when the phone is closed making it easier to use than conventional folder-type phones.
Games for the unit need to be downloaded, although with its Memory Stick Duo capability it may be
possible to buy cartridges off the rack in the future (except that Sony's Memory Stick Duo is the most
expensive form of micro-storage right now).
The V450 also offers users a joystick on the extension for a more real and convenient mobile gaming
experience. In addition, users are able to extend the memory storage by inserting a memory card into a slot
that is on the side of the phone. Upon purchase, the phone comes with a 32MB Memory Stick Duo.
The V450 allows users to play MP3 files without opening the folder as all command functions are on the
extended keypad. While playing music, users are able to control several functions like pause, skip, revival
and random choice, and alter the screen image that suits the mood and speed of the music. This is one area
where the V450 trumps N-Gage since portable music is even more in demand than mobile gaming.
With the V450, users are able to record up to 2 and half hours of images/video as well as send images by
phone through MMS. The V450 seems to be the more multimedia savvy of the pair although only time will
tell if multifunctionality will be enough to bring Samsung into the gaming area.
With these two contenders in the market, mobile gamers have some compelling options to take their games
on the road. Nokia is hinging its hopes on the wireless network gaming capabilities of its N-Gage and Samsung
seems to thrive in dominating the mobile multimedia front. The true judge of success is of course the games
themselves and if these are good enough to hook gamers away from their beloved Gameboys.
