SEPTEMBER 2004 ISSUE

Drowned World

The use of three frames on a single subject records movement through something more like a short film than a still photograph. Amplified colors-the water made bluer, the floating fabric made redder, and the skin made whiter-adds to the moody atmosphere of the photograph. In a number of his photographs, Angeles does not shy away from images that disturb and provoke: the subject Nicolette Bell appears to be drowning, but it is curiously presented stunningly and peacefully.
