SEPTEMBER 2004 ISSUE

Pure Grit

More than just a portrait, this photograph of model Joan Bitangcol is all about texture. It's all in the details: while the focus centers on the middle of the subject's face - sharpening the shadows of the dust spread across her face and the gristly fibers pressed between her lips - more texture in the photograph is added by other objects out-of-focus, namely the subject's knotted collar and curly hair. (Her hair is smartly highlighted with copper, bringing out the dimensions of the curls and reinforcing texture once again.) The use of a hard light adds to the treatment-if a softer light had been used, the full tactile effect would not have been as powerful as shown here.
