The Rise of the Middle Class

Nissan Cefiro
P 1.190M (Classic) to P 1.450M (300EX)

If the Galant is going on seven, the Nissan Cefiro is going on eight. This rather long life cycle is cleverly rendered less obvious, though, due to a succession of clever tweaks, upgrades and facelifts throughout this platform's life. (Check out its 2004 incarnation on page 26.) If you're the type who rides in the back seat with a uniformed chauffeur in front, then this is the ride for you. A spacious and extravagantly appointed (i.e. power window sunshades, natch!) cabin pampers and soothes you after the daily grind as the ultra-smooth 24-valve quad-cam V6 engines (now with an available 3.0-liter V6 with a best-in-class power output) whisk you off to another destination. Another Cefiro strength is its plush ride from its front strut/rear multi-link beam suspension - and its sheer pothole-smothering mass. Just don't expect to set records at the local slalom or autocross track. - Manny N. de los Reyes

Grins: Smooth V6 engines, available high-power 3.0-liter motor, smooth-shifting gearbox, smooth ride, spacious and extremely well-appointed cabin

Grimaces: Some bits like the doors and greenhouse are getting a bit too familiar, gas station owners will love you

The Lowdown: The ultimate driving machine for backseat drivers.
